Stay tuned; I'll be giving you more details soon, but for now back to this month’s newsletter:

The Art of Growing and Showing Aquilegia or Columbine.

Aquilegia. ‘Columbine’. In gardens of old, the columbine or Hardy Border Aguilegia occupied a position of prominence, for they formed one of the groups of Hardy Perennial flowers that were cultivated when gardening was in its infancy. How different are the Hardy Border Aquilegia of the 21st century to those varieties of the 17th century. The new hybrids are a joy to behold; my favourite Hardy Border Aquilegia is William Guinness.

The columbine or Aquilegia hardy perennials are delightful flowers of early summer; the plants, 2 feet in height, last in bloom for many weeks and the flowers are ideal for cutting. The aquilegia will thrive in ordinary garden soil, but prefer rather moist, soil with plenty of well-rotted garden compost incorporated.

As with all flowerbeds, to get the best results the incorporation of well-rotted garden compost is always beneficial for good root and flower production, we have an article on compost making at :->

http://gardencomposthelp.blogspot.com/

The incorporation of well-rotted garden compost is a must if your garden soil is of the heavy clay type. Also leaf mould is also very good as a mulch in the winter months, leaf mould will take up to 18 months to breakdown. Sand or sharp grit is also good for opening the soil.

A sunny or partially shaded position suits them best. Planting may be done in September, October, November and February-March.

There are many new varieties available today one of the most striking is the Songbird Series; songbird Dove and songbird Goldfinch are of fine merit. But there is still a place for the older varieties such as the Yellow Aquilegia ‘chrysantha’, Aquilegia ‘longissima’ another yellow with beautiful long spurred kind and Aquilegia columbine ‘valgaris’.

The named varieties are readily increased by root division. The newer strains produce a delightful colour range when grown from seed. This is now the recognized method of propagation.

Division of the roots is always available if you find a particularly good colour combination and wish to increase it, with root division the offspring always come true to form, this cannot be said with seed sowing.

Also with division the best plants are always fresh. With most hardy plants the flowers do tend to lose there quality if left to grow on the same stem for more than two or three years.
